Interior Design

K-State is an excellent place to get your start as an interior designer! In fact, our undergradute interior design program is ranked first in the nation by the Design Futures Council. Each year, the council surveys over 200 leading professionals about which college and university programs have "best prepared students for today's and tomorrow's professional practice." The results are publish annually in DesignIntelligence's issue of America's Best Architecture & Design Schools. You can be confident that your efforts in our program will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the interior design profession.

Interior design students learn the creative, aesthetic, and technical information and skills necessary to translate a design concept into a three-dimensional reality. As part of this four-year professional program, students develop expertise in critical thinking and spatial design. Students develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Interior space planning
  • Selection and specification of interior furnishings and finishes
  • Graphic and verbal presentation
  • Model building
  • Computer-aided design and drafting
  • Preparation of contract documents
  • Construction systems, processes and materials
  • Building codes
  • Business procedures
  • Professional ethics
  • Project administration

Students have many opportunities for contact with professionals and the professional world throughout the program. The curriculum includes the opportunity for a summer internship, a variety of domestic and foreign study tours, and study abroad through relationships between Kansas State University and several foreign universities. Students in the Interior Design Program have opportunities to work in teams, participate in service learning projects, and learn from professionals in the region who participate as critics and guest lecturers.

Student chapters of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) provide the opportunity for interior design students to network with professionals in our region and to continue their education outside the classroom.

K-State's Interior Design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, which certifies that the program meets the educational standards set by the Interior Design profession. Earning a degree from a Council for Interior Design Accreditation-accredited program impacts the right of individuals to practice Interior Design in states with licensure or registration laws.
