Kansas State University

Interior Design

K-State is an excellent place to get your start as an interior designer! DesignIntelligence and the Almanac for Architecture & Design consistently have ranked the interior design program at Kansas State University among the best in the country. The interior design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Our students win national awards for their work, and the best design firms in the nation snap up our graduates each year.

Interior design students learn the creative, aesthetic, and technical information and skills necessary to translate a design concept into a three-dimensional reality. As part of this four-year professional program, students develop expertise in critical thinking and spatial design. Students develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Interior space planning
  • Selection and specification of interior furnishings and finishes
  • Graphic and verbal presentation
  • Model building
  • Computer-aided design and drafting
  • Preparation of contract documents
  • Construction systems, processes and materials
  • Building codes
  • Business procedures
  • Professional ethics
  • Project administration

Students have many opportunities for contact with professionals and the professional world throughout the program. The curriculum includes the opportunity for a summer internship, a variety of domestic and foreign study tours, and study abroad through relationships between Kansas State University and several foreign universities. Students in the Interior Design Program have opportunities to work in teams, participate in service learning projects, and learn from professionals in the region who participate as critics and guest lecturers.

Student chapters of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) provide the opportunity for interior design students to network with professionals in our region and to continue their education outside the classroom.
