ATID Study Abroad Information

Study abroad is an increasing popular option for students in the Department of Apparel, Textiles and Interior Design. The Office of International Programs, 304 Fairchild Hall, (785) 532-5990, is a good place to start exploring study abroad opportunities.

Another option is to study at the American Intercontinental University in London.

Students who are interested a study abroad opportunity should complete the steps listed below to prepare for such an experience:

  1. Attend a general study abroad orientation in the Office of International Programs. These orientations are held at various times throughout the spring and fall semesters. Please visit the OIP web site for days and times.
  2. Research your options. Start research options by looking at web sites, and by looking at written materials in the Study Abroad Office. Also, the OIP web site has some links that may help.
  3. Choose your language of study. Decide what role language will play in your study abroad experience.
    • Do you want to learn another language?
    • Do you want to perfect another language you already know?
    • Do you want to study in English?
  4. Think about cost. How much money can you afford to spend on the study abroad experience? Remember that all financial aid and scholarships apply to study abroad. Also, out-of-state students will pay in-state rates for their study abroad time. If you want to explore borrowing money for this experience, you should make an appointment with Lucille Wiley in the Financial Aid Office on the first floor of Fairchild Hall.
  5. Consult your academic advisor. Work with your advisor to determine what classes can be taken abroad, and how they will transfer back to KSU. While all classes transfer back for hours credit, the advisor should make sure that classes taken overseas will fulfill requirements for the major.
  6. Schedule a study abroad advising session. When you have some ideas of what you want to do, make an appointment with Crissan Zeigler, OIP, at (785) 532-5990.
  7. Get a passport (and visas, if required). You must have a passport to travel abroad. Many countries also require you to get a visa for studying that country. You have to get the passport before you can apply for a visa. Applications for a passport can be done at the Manhattan Post Office, 500 Leavenworth Street, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. You will need the following documentation when you apply for a passport:
    • An application form (available at OIP or the post office)
    • An original birth certificate
    • Two passport sized photos (available at Kinko's, Mail Boxes Etc., or Sears)
    • $60.00 application fee
  8. Sign your passport. It may take up to six weeks to arrive!
  9. Be sure you have health insurance. Health insurance must cover medical needs while abroad. Most students are covered by their parents' insurance policies. Students going to Australia are required to purchase Australian coverage when they make their application, and those going out on ISEP are provided with health coverage. All others who do not health insurance must purchase it through the Study Abroad office. The cost is approximately $30.00/month for the time abroad.
  10. Complete your application for study abroad. You will need the following information and documentation to complete your application:
    • Completed application form
    • Official transcripts
    • Two letters of reference
    • A statement of purpose (one page essay)
    • Copy of your passport
    • Proof of health insurance
    • Academic advisor approval of selected classes
    • Application fee
    • Completed on-campus residence application (if appropriate)
    • Attend the Orientation for Outgoing Students scheduled through IOP
  11. Get an international student ID card. This identity card will get you discounts on airplane, train, and bus travel, hotel and hostel stays, entrance to concerts, museums and plays. You can get this card at the UPC office in the third floor of the KSU Union. With $22.00, a KSU ID, and a photograph, you can get an ISIC card. This card may be used to purchase plane tickets to study abroad.
