Short Biography:

Teaching and research is Dr. Macchi’s passion. He enjoys working with students as they develop a professional identity and the skills to provide effective clinical practice. He leads a research team of undergraduate and graduate students to support a contract with SRS and KHS providing training and support of home-based family therapists in Kansas. He is also actively pursuing a research program designed to study systemic change processes within the individual and family context. Currently, Dr. Macchi is working with a team of researchers from KSU and the University of Kansas School of Medicine studying biopsychosocial factors of weight management associated with patients who undergo bariatric surgery. Dr. Macchi also supervises masters and doctoral students during their clinical practica as well doctoral students who are supervisors-in-training during their supervision practicum.

Dr. Macchi is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, a Colleague and a Certified Family Life Educator with the National Council on Family Relations, and a member of the American Psychological Association – Division of Family Psychology (Division 43). Dr, Macchi is currently serving as President for the Kansas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Dr. Macchi’s clinical practice in Topeka is focused on work with individuals, couples, and families who are experiencing depression, anxiety, and conflict associated with periods of adjustment and transition. Dr. Macchi specializes in therapeutic work with those who are trying to manage their chronic condition and the impact that management has on their important relationships. The practice is focused in two areas:

Physical Health Conditions
This first area of focus provides therapeutic support to those of all ages and their families who experience the stresses and adjustments of managing health conditions such as: diabetes self-management, pediatric obesity, weight loss and maintenance, and bariatric surgery.
Mental Health Conditions
This second area of focus provides therapeutic support to those families with a member who has a developmental disorder or other condition such as Asperger’s Syndrome and Alzheimer’s.
