Opportunities for Students

Students in the master’s and doctoral programs in marriage and family therapy graduate with a rich array of clinical and research experiences. In addition to conducting a variety of client therapy services through the Center, students also have the opportunity to work with faculty in a range of research projects designed to better understand families, issues and treatment processes. Research topics include supervision, adolescent suicide, chronic illness and the family, trauma, and infidelity.

Students may also choose to participate in various clinical placements outside of the Center. Students facilitate groups at the Crisis Center, Mercy Regional Health Center Behavioral Health Unit, and Salina Regional Medical Center. They provide premarital counseling at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center and therapy at Ft. Riley Family Life Center, Flint Hills Job Corp, Life Choice Ministries, KSU College of Veterinary Medicine, and Head Start. The Center also has a contract with Community Corrections to provide therapy services to adolescents who have been involved in the legal system.

Students provide foster parent training through a contract with the Kansas Children’s Service League, and Home-Based Family Therapy Training to clinicians through a contract with Social and Rehabilitative Services and the Kansas Community Mental Health Centers.
