Undergraduate Programs

The School of Family Studies and Human Services is focused at the undergraduate level on the study of individuals and families from a multidisciplinary perspective. Programs emphasize developmental processes throughout the life cycle; interpersonal relationships; personal financial planning; intervention for speech, language and hearing problems; and educational programming for children and families. The School places great importance on laboratory and field experiences along with classroom experiences.

Graduates in family studies and human services are respected for their excellent educational background in the human sciences, including the experience they have gained through community service, field experiences and internships. Many go directly to professional positions in youth and adult service agencies, health care organizations, college financial aid offices, state and federal social service departments, financial counseling centers, and many other businesses and organizations. Others attend graduate school. They make a difference in people's lives.

A committed team of child development specialists, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, sociologists, educators, economists, speech pathologists, gerontologists, social workers and health specialists work with students. Many are nationally recognized leaders in their fields who are actively involved in the business of teaching and learning. All of them want students to succeed in helping people live happier, healthier and more productive lives.

Laboratory and field experiences, volunteering, community service and internships are considered essential to student success. Supervision by professors and community professionals enhances career development, as do seminars in which students discuss and evaluate their hands-on experiences. Collaboration with campus, community, regional and national organizations in the fields of education, business and government makes these experiences happen.
