FAQs for Undergraduate Students

What is Human Ecology, anyway?
Take a look at this page with a definition, a little information about the field of human ecology, and some of our history. Let us know if you have more questions!
What can I do with a degree from the College of Human Ecology?
You’ll be amazed at the career paths we offer! Our alumni go on to careers in science and research, the hospitality industry, social service agencies, design firms, sports organizations…the list goes on and on. Check out the possibilities.
I’m not sure what I want to do professionally. How can I figure it out?
You need to take a quiz! This totally unscientific, non-randomized, in-no-way-really-valid test is a fun way to see whether your talents and interests might make you a good fit with the College of Human Ecology. Then why don’t you check out this information for some details about your career options.
Can I study abroad or participate in a student exchange program while I’m a student in the College of Human Ecology?
Absolutely! In fact, we strongly encourage an international or exchange experience. Here’s some info about what K-State offers.
I really want to do an internship while I’m at K-State. How do I make that happen?
Good thinking! In fact, many programs require an internship before you graduate, and others strongly recommend them. Internships help you build valuable professional skills and contacts. College of Human Ecology students have internships right here in Manhattan, and as far away as Korea. Some are for a summer and some are for an entire semester. You will put together a resume and apply directly to companies or organizations, based on information and help from your advisor or other faculty members.
I’m a guy. My older brother says there aren’t any guys in the College of Human Ecology. What’s the deal?
Sorry to be blunt, but your brother needs to get up to speed! Yes, there are currently more women than men in our College, but so what? Many of our programs attract exceptional women, and many of our programs attract lots of outstanding guys, including athletic training and hotel and restaurant management; both of these programs are about 50/50. We have more male tenured faculty than female right now, and two of our four department heads are men. To sum it up, you won’t be the only guy walking down the hall, not by a long shot.
How does the College of Human Ecology support diversity?
A mix of perspectives and life experiences is absolutely crucial for a successful, vital College, so we are 100% committed to building diversity and cultural awareness. Here’s a list of links to some organizations you might want to check into and here you can email , the College's Academic Services Coordinator, to discuss diversity in our College.
