Foodservice and Hospitality Management: Master’s and Ph.D.
The Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics was one of the first units in the College to begin granting graduate degrees – the first master’s degree was granted in 1921! Students choose between and emphasis in foodservice or hospitality management. Students graduate with the theoretical and research base to prepare graduates for managerial, educational or research positions in foodservice and hospitality management. Students design their program of study through personal and professional objectives while enhancing departmental research. Research opportunities are available in foodservice, tourism, gaming, lodging and dietetics education.
Alumni Advice to Future Students:
“Come and make a visit. You’ll know if you’ll fit and be comfortable in a setting once you’ve been there and K-State has some wonderful opportunities, but best of all it has great people and it is these connections and relationships that will make your experience at K-State a building block for the potential you have to reach your career and life goals.” — Tandy Rundus, MS, RD, LD, ’02 HMD, District Extension Agent, River Valley Extension District, Belleville, KS
“If you have any doubts, visit with one of the faculty. I was considering graduate school, set an appointment with a faculty member. I went to the appointment to gather information about the graduate program and left with excitement about the future and positive feelings about making the right decision.” — Kara Wolfe, PhD., ’99 and ’02 HMD, assistant professor and program coordinator for hospitality and tourism management, North Dakota State University
“Keep an open mind about your coursework and always look for opportunities to expand your knowledge base. Never say ‘never,’ as someday you might be in a job that you said you’d never do!” — Melissa A. Schraeder, MS, RD, LD, ’04 HMD, Registered Dietetian, K-State Department of Housing and Dining Services and Instructor in the Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics
