Dietetics: Bachelor’s Degree Distance Program
Dietitians help people make healthy lifestyle changes —and who doesn’t need that? K-State is redefining dietetics education through this innovative degree program geared to produce professionals who help clients choose the right combination of foods to enhance their health and combat health concerns. Our nation is in an obesity crisis, so dietitians are in great demand —in fact, the demand exceeds the supply! Once an RD, you will be qualified for a diverse career field that will provide you with maximum flexibility throughout your lifetime. You might work in private practice, health care, foodservice, journalism, sports medicine or business and industry. In this profession, you are only limited by your energy level and your imagination!
How It Works
The program provides the academic components required to sit for the national registered dietitian exam. To complete the 900-hour supervised internship also required prior to taking the RD exam, students must either find a qualified internship in their community or relocate to Kansas for their final year.
Those needing to complete an entire bachelor’s degree in dietetics will need to transfer some general education requirements from a local community college or another institution. If needed, K-State advisors can provide additional information about other colleges offering programs to meet many of these requirements at a distance.
Alumni Advice to Future Students:
“Distance dietetics through KSU was a much richer experience than I ever expected. I feel like the instructors shared not only book information, but all of their practical experiences. I felt like my fellow online classmates were part of a team. I never felt competitiveness…just camaraderie and I feel like we learned a lot.” —Joy Huber, ’05 dietetics, dietetic intern in Anchorage, Alaska, first intern on the board of the Alaska Dietetic Association
“If you are a self-starter, motivated and would like to get a good education, K-State offers a well-coordinated distance education in dietetics that can help you to fulfill your dreams. I completed my required coursework without relocating myself and my family to another part of the country.” —Christina Liew, MS, RD, LD/N, ’XX in dietetics, senior public health nutritionist/coordinator
“I was able to continue my education without having to commute. With a family and two small children, it was extremely important for me to be home with them. The distance classes were awesome and so were the instructors. Classes were taught by qualified, respected people in the dietetics field….I have actually spoke to the local community college dietetics students in New Orleans about the distance dietetics program at KSU….Without hesitation, I can say that KSu stands out in preparing its students in the dietetics field!” —Trudy Williams, ’05 dietetics, dietetic intern and clinical dietetic technician, North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA
