College of Human Ecology at K-State selects outstanding seniors

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University’s College of Human Ecology is presenting its Outstanding Senior Award to 16 graduating seniors. The college selects its outstanding seniors from each academic area it offers.
The selections are made by faculty and are based on the students’ academic achievements; leadership, participation and service on campus and in the community; and their professional potential.
Award recipients are:
Amber Weaver, senior in human ecology and mass communications, Abilene, is a communication intern and public relations assistant for the College of Human Ecology . She also has served as a Human Ecology Ambassador and is a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron and Kappa Omicron Nu, human ecology national honor societies. Weaver has been a volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the College Hill Preschool. She is the daughter of Chuck and Marsha Weaver, Abilene.
Liza Dunn, senior in apparel design, Clay Center, is the recipient of the College of Human Ecology’s R. Jean Sego Commencement Award for her academic excellence and leadership ability. Dunn is president of the Human Ecology Council and is a member of Blue Key, a senior leadership honorary. She also is a member of Kappa Omicron Nu, human ecology national honor society. Dunn is the daughter of Gayle and Lynette Dunn, Clay Center.
Cassie Ernzen, senior in life span human development, Easton, is a member of Kappa Omicron Nu, national human ecology honor society, and Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She also served in Chimes, the junior honorary, and Silver Key, the sophomore honorary. She has been involved with several campus and community activities, including Stone House Child Development Center, Boys and Girls Club and the Pawnee Mental Health Center. She is the daughter of Bart and Karen Ernzen, Easton.
Jamie Rathbun, senior in family and consumer sciences education, Ellsworth, is a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Interest Group, where she has served as treasurer and president, and the Kansas Students National Education Association. She also has participated in the College of Human Ecology Honors Program for three years. Rathbun, a 2000 graduate of Marysville High School, is the daughter of Jeri Vineyard, Marysville.
Jennifer Witsken, senior in public health nutrition and dietetics, Fort Leavenworth, is a research assistant at K-State’s Community Health Institute. She is a member of Kappa Omicron Nu, human ecology national honor society, as well as the Kaw Valley and K-State Student Dietetic associations and the K-State Health and Nutrition Society. Her community service includes volunteering at the Manhattan Emergency Center. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Jeanne Witsken, Fort Leavenworth.
Katie Rishel, senior in interior design, Garden City, is president of International Interior Design Association-K-State Campus Center, a Human Ecology Ambassador and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society. She also has served as an undergraduate teaching assistant for interior design graphics. She is the daughter of Tom and Linda Rishel, Garden City.
Jonathan Mein, senior in nutritional sciences, Girard, serves as an undergraduate research assistant for the departments of human nutrition and chemistry. A recipient of a Basic Cancer Research Award, he also was selected as the College of Human Ecology’s student of the month for March. Mein is a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; Kappa Omicron Nu, a national human ecology honor society; Golden Key, an international honor society; and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He is the son of Alan and Virginia Mein, Girard.
Kimberly Kerschen, senior in dietetics, Harper, has been active with the K-State Student Dietetic Association, where she has served as president, vice president and treasurer. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society, and was selected the College of Human Ecology’s March 2004 student of the month. She also has been a volunteer with several organizations, including the Riley County Health Department and Home Care and Hospice. She is the daughter of Patrick and Loretta Kerschen, Harper.
April Hammond Bilbrey, senior in textile science, Larned, is a member of the College of Human Ecology Honors Program; Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society; the National Society of Collegiate Scholars; and serves as secretary of K-State’s chapter of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. She also was selected as the college’s February student of the month and is on the National Dean’s List. Bilbrey is the daughter of Wade Hammond and Julee Hammond, both of Larned.
Alisha Hardman, senior in family life and community service, McPherson, serves as a youth resources coordinator at the Regional Prevention Center of Northeast Kansas. She is a member of Golden Key, an international honor society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She also is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Hardman is the daughter of Terry and Kathy Hardman, McPherson.
Jana Hawkins, senior in early childhood education, Manhattan, is a member of K-State’s Early Childhood Education Interest Group. She also is working with a multidisciplinary group through the Kansas Department of Education that is developing appropriate physical activities for young children. Hawkins is the daughter of Mel and Jan Schulz, Parnell, Iowa, and a 1999 graduate of Iowa Mennonite School in Kalona, Iowa.
Gabriel Asebedo, senior in personal financial planning, Olsburg, is president of K-State’s Future Financial Planners Student Organization. A member of K-State’s 2004 National Collegiate Financial Planning Competition team, he is co-author of the article, “Predicting Mutual Fund Over-performance Over a Nine-Year Period,” published in the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education Journal. Asebedo is the son of Edwin and Kathy Asebedo, Olsburg.
Karen Thompson, senior in communication sciences and disorders, Salina, is a State of Kansas Scholar and a member of the K-State Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is active with her sorority, Kappa Delta, and has served as a volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, K-State Telefund and a local day-care center. She is the daughter of Doug and Mariann Thompson, Salina.
Aimee Truetken, senior in nutrition and exercise sciences, Selden, is a fitness consultant at K-State’s Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex and also works as an assistant a local health center. She has served as president of the K-State Health and Nutrition Society and is an associate member of the American Dietetic Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She also has been a volunteer for several organizations, including Special Olympics and the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Truetken is the daughter of Ladimir and Lori Truetken.
Katherine Maurer, senior in apparel marketing, Wichita, is a member of Golden Key, an international honor society; National Society of Collegiate Scholars; and Kappa Omicron Nu, a national human ecology honor society. She also is a member of the Human Ecology Council and Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She is the daughter of John and Jan Maurer, Wichita, and a graduate of Andover High School.
Sarah Roehrich, senior in hotel and restaurant management, Colorado Springs, Colo., is a member of the Human Ecology Council and K-State’s Hospitality Management Society. She also has been a volunteer for a local animal shelter. Roehrich is a 2000 graduate of Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park and the daughter of Robert and Barbara Roehrich, Colorado Springs.
