Outstanding Senior Awards

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University’s College of Human Ecology is presenting its Outstanding Senior Award to 16 graduating seniors.

The college selects its outstanding seniors from each academic area it offers. The selections are made by faculty and are based on the students’ academic achievements, leadership, participation in service on campus and in the community, and their professional potential.

Award recipients are:

* Shandi Brabb, senior in family and consumer sciences education, Alta Vista. Brabb has served as president and vice president of the Family and Consumer Sciences Interest Group and was a member of the College of Human Ecology Council, serving as secretary. She has participated in K-State’s Telefund and attended the 2005 Leadership Honors Bootcamp in Washington, D.C. Brabb, who will teach family and consumer sciences at Paola High School beginning in fall 2006, just completed student teaching at the Paola school and at Spring Hill Middle School. A 2003 graduate of Council Grove High School, she is the daughter of Gene Brabb, Alta Vista, and Shelly Corp, Pawnee Rock.

* Melissa Wagner, senior in apparel marketing and design, Bennington. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Eta Sigma honoraries. She has been the recipient of both Foundation and Human Ecology scholarships from K-State. Wagner earned an associate degree in advertising and marketing communications from the Fashion Institute of New York, graduating magna cum laude. She is the daughter of Don and Debbie Wagner, Bennington, and a 2002 graduate of Southeast of Saline High School.

* Kaley Peters, senior in family life and community services, Great Bend. Peters is serving as a spring intern with K-State new student services, assisting prospective K-State students and their families. She has been a member of the K-State Christian Challenge and K-State Navigators, and also has been active in the University Christian Church, serving on its Hospitality Ministry Team and Journey College Ministry. Her community service work includes being a mentor and helping with team-building activities through the UFM Community Learning Center’s Teen Mentoring Program. Peters is the daughter Ron and Wanda Peters, Great Bend, and a 2002 graduate of Great Bend High School.

* Dawn Bentz Osborne, senior in human nutrition and kinesiology, Hope. Through scholarships, part-time employment and an internship, Osborne has gained educational experience and has self-supported her college education. She has worked for K-State’s housing and dining services in a variety of positions, including at the Jardine Apartment Complex, as assistant manager of the Quik Cats convenience store and as a resident assistant at Haymaker Hall. As an intern for the Olathe Family YMCA in summer 2004, one of her responsibilities included designing nutrition education curricula for a varied clientele base. Osborne is a 2001 graduate of Hope High School and is the daughter of Cynthia Bentz, Hope.

* Kristin Ross, senior in athletic training, Horton. Ross has been active in several organizations at K-State, including the Student Athletic Trainer Organization; College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors, serving as treasurer; and the Kinesiology Student Association. She also has been a volunteer for K-State’s All-University Open House and All-University Career Fair, and the K-State Telefund. Following her graduation from K-State in May, Ross will enter Rockhurst University’s doctoral physical therapy program. A 2001 graduate of Horton High School, she is the daughter of Timothy and Jana Ross, Horton.

* Megan Pounds, senior in communication sciences and disorders, Larned. Pounds, who has a 4.0 grade point average in her major and has been a K-State honors list student, is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars honor societies. A member of K-State’s Speech, Language and Hearing Association, she is a volunteer lab instructor for a speech anatomy course. She also is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and has served on its philanthropy, education, social and external relations committees. Pounds has been active in community service, serving as a volunteer for the Court Appointed Special Advocates program, Flint Hills Breadbasket, St. Joseph Village and Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community. Pounds, a 2002 graduate of Great Bend High School, is the daughter of Von and Connie Pounds, Larned.

* Alyssa Holste, senior in life span human development, Ludell. A K-State honors list student, Holste is a member of Golden Key and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars honor societies, as well as Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-health professions honorary. She also is a member of Beta Sigma Psi’s Lil’ Sis’s of the Gold Rose. Holste also is active in K-State’s chapter of Up ‘Til Dawn, a tutor at the Jardine Apartment Complex and a volunteer at Manhattan Daycare and Learning Center. Following her graduation from K-State in May, Holste will attend the University of Kansas to earn a degree in nursing. She is a 2002 graduate of Atwood High School and the daughter of Jerry and Barb Holste, Ludell.

* Meghan Hampton, senior in biology and nutritional sciences, Manhattan. A K-State honors list student, Hampton is a member of the College of Human Ecology honors program; Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies; Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-health professions honorary; Kappa Omicron Nu, the honor society for human sciences; and Alpha Chi Sigma, the chemistry honorary. She also is a peer educator for Sensible Nutrition and Body Image Choices and belongs to K-State’s Ichthus Christian Fellowship. After graduating from K-State in May, Hampton will attend the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she has been a Scholar in Primary Care since fall 2004. Hampton is the daughter of Kent and Colleen Hampton, Manhattan.

* Karla Kepley, senior in dietetics, Thayer. Kepley was named to USA Today’s 2006 All-USA College Academic Third Team. She also is the recipient of the College of Human Ecology’s May 2006 R. Jean Sego Award and will deliver the college’s student commencement address. A College of Human Ecology Dean’s Scholar and K-State Leadership Scholar, Kepley also is a member of the college’s honors program and Kappa Omicron Nu and Phi Upsilon Omicron honor societies. She has served as president of the K-State Student Dietetic Association; open house chair for the College of Human Ecology Ambassadors; treasurer for Alpha Gamma Epsilon Gerontology Club; and a member of the College of Human Ecology Council and the K-State Community Service Club. She also has been active with Alpha of Clovia, serving as scholarship chair, business manager and chaplain. Kepley currently is serving as a dietetics intern with the Eastern Kansas Healthcare System at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth. She also was in Botswana in summer 2005 and helped with various projects while a dietitian intern with a hospital. A 2002 graduate of Thayer High School, she is the daughter of Jim Kepley, Chanute, and Cindy Stiles, Thayer.

* Shane Frownfelter, senior in hotel and restaurant management, Topeka. Frownfelter is a former president of the Hospitality Management Society and is a member of Eta Sigma Delta, the national honor society for hotel and restaurant management students. He has been involved with K-State’s annual Hospitality and Dining Auction, serving as marketing chair in 2004. He has represented K-State at the Hotel and Restaurant Managements Program of the International Hotel and Motel Show in New York City and at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago. He also was selected to represent K-State’s hotel and restaurant management program at the Michael Hurst Salute to Student Excellence Awards gala and banquet at the National Restaurant Show. He has completed internships with Panera Bread and at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Seoul, Korea. He also has a been a laboratory assistant for two semesters for the Food Production Management classes. A 2001 graduate of Washburn Rural High School, he is the son of Jim and Diane Frownfelter, Topeka.

* Kacie Rognlie, senior in public health nutrition, Topeka. A K-State honors list student and Foundation scholar, Rognlie is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. She also is a member of Blue Key, a senior leadership honorary. The secretary of K-State Pre-Physical Therapy Club, she has been accepted into the physical therapy doctorate program at the University of Kansas Medical Center. As president of K-State’s Health and Nutrition Society, Rognlie and other members of the group helped prepare and serve meals to Hurricane Katrina survivors and volunteers during this year’s spring break. A 2002 graduate of Shawnee Heights Senior High School, Rognlie is the daughter of Brad and Lori Rognlie, Topeka.

* Andrea Youngers, senior in personal financial planning, Viola. Youngers is part of the three-member student team selected to represent K-State at the 2006 Ameriprise Planning Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. She also has been a K-State delegate and received a scholarship to attend the National Success Forum of the Financial Planning Association, both in 2004 and 2005. Youngers, the social chair for the K-State Future Financial Planners, took a leadership role in establishing the Invest-a-Cats, a student-managed investment account. Her volunteer work includes assisting with conservation work in New Zealand in summer 2004. She also has volunteered with the United Way of Riley County, March of Dimes and the Diocesan Catholic Youth Board. The daughter of Wayne and Teresa Youngers, she is a 2002 graduate of Goddard High School.

* Jake Quigley, senior in family studies and human services with a secondary major in gerontology/long-term care administration, Wamego. Quigley, the recipient of the 2005-2006 Lucille Reitz Gerontology Scholarship, is serving an internship as an administrator-in-training at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan. He also is an outreach coordinator at the K-State Center on Aging. He is active in his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, where he serves as president. He also has served as its philanthropy and community service chair, recruitment chair and executive academic chair. He has been director of recruitment for the K-State Interfraternity Council; a K-State Greek Week events coordinator; a graduate of the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute; and received a K-State Greek leadership award in 2003. Quigley is the recipient of a 2005 Boys Scouts of America Outstanding Volunteer Award. The son of Tressa Farrell, Wamego, he is a 2002 graduate of Rock Creek High School.

* Rachel Ulrick, senior in family studies and human services, Nixa, Mo. A K-State honors list student, Ulrick is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the 2005-2006 National Dean’s List. She has served an internship with Riley County K-State Research and Extension. Her community involvement also includes serving with a Fort Riley task force in family readiness, as a youth sponsor at Impact Youth Ministries in Manhattan and with Protestant Women of the Chapel at Fort Riley. She will attend the Assembly of God Theological Seminary in fall 2006 to work on a master’s in counseling. She is currently working in Nixa with the Christian County Coalition on Aging, providing the elderly with home maintenance and companionship. Ulrick is a 1999 graduate of Kearney High School in Kearney, Neb., and the daughter of David and Cindy Malone, also of Kearney.

* Elizabeth Greig, senior in nutritional sciences and Spanish, Clovis, N.M. Greig, who has been a K-State honors list student, is a member of Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Omicron Nu honoraries. She also is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-health professions honorary and the College of Human Ecology honors program. The recipient of several scholarships, Greig received a Phi Kappa Phi study abroad grant in 2003. As a participant in K-State’s International Teams program, Greig taught English and nutrition to girls in Tampico, Mexico. She has been accepted to medical school at the University of New Mexico and is a finalist for a Fulbright Scholarship, which she would use to obtain a master’s in public health in Mexico. A 2001 graduate of Clovis High School, she is the daughter of Hal Greig and Francine Stuckey-Greig, Clovis.

* Amy Gowens, senior in interior design, Edmond, Okla. A member of the College of Human Ecology Council and the college’s honors program, Gowens has served as president and vice president of Kappa Omicron Nu honor society, and technology officer of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She also is a member of Golden Key, an scholastic honorary; the National Dean’s List; American Society of Interior Designers; and International Interior Design Association, where she serves as symposium chair. At the 2005 Brass Ring Awards program, Gowens received first place in the corporate and health care divisions. She also received a Gold Best of Show award. A 2002 graduate of Andover High School, she is the daughter of Jim and Cheryl Gowens, also of Edmond.
