Hospitality management students raise $15,000

Auction Team

This was a year of firsts for the Travel and Dining Auction which netted $15,000 to support scholarships and to support student travel to professional conferences.

First year in the Alumni Center, first year students worked through a catering company, first year dietetic students have played a role.

About 200 attended the recent 11th annual auction, according to chair Alyssa Provencio, a senior from Derby, Ks., above in second photo. The event is part of the hotel and restaurant management program in HRIMD.

Alyssa is pleased. So are HRIMD faculty sponsors Pat Pesci and Kevin Roberts.

“We had more donations and raised more money than last year,” Alyssa said. The Student Dietetics Association manned the childcare room and donated three gift baskets.

The hardest part, according to Alyssa, was coping with last minute donations. The program was finished minutes before the doors opened.

The most fun, she said, was working with fellow students who “got the job done.” “Interacting with other people, seeing all the bits and pieces come together. . .I loved it,” she said.

Alyssa worked for 12 months on the event and earned 3 credit hours. She is a hotel and restaurant major with minors in leadership, business and pre-law.

Claire Hemmendinger, 2008 chair, has already started to work on the next auction slated for April 11.
