New faculty: Ali Trammell – a fan of Stone House children and KSU football

Cody and his teacher Ali Trammell share grins. Jacob busies himself in the background.
Ali Trammell proudly follows in her mother’s footsteps.
Both started their careers as special education teachers. Both moved into higher education.
“She’s a good mentor,” Trammell said. “I still call her for advice.”
Trammell began college at K-State. But when her mother started working at Pittsburgh State University, daughter transferred there for both graduate and undergraduate degrees.
For 10 years, she taught early childhood and special education in Winfield.
This summer Trammell moved back to Manhattan to a new job as an instructor at Stone House and to a new challenge. She is beginning a PhD program in Life Span and Human Development.
Her classroom, a living lab for early childhood education students, holds up to 20 children ranging from 2 ½ to 5 years old. Most are 3 and 4 years old, she said. Formally called Hoeflin Stone House Child Care Center, the facility is located on the north side of campus on North Manhattan Avenue and is licensed with both state and national accreditation.
“Children are active learners,” Trammell said. “They learn best when they construct their own knowledge and philosophy about things they see and do.”
Trammell’s son Gavin, 3 ½, is across the hall in the Rainbow Room. “That works well,” she laughed. “Better than if he were in my classroom.”
Trammell doesn’t expect to have much spare time during the week, she said. But this fall, weekends belong to football.
“I’m a big fan of K-State and the Chiefs.”
