ExpanSIS: New system wins third award
Monday, October 29th, 2007

ExpanSIS, an information system developed by the Institute for Academic Alliances (IAA) and Office of Mediated Education at K-State, received a third major award today.
The Association for Continuing Higher Education honored ExpanSIS with its Creative Use of Technology Award at the annual conference in Roanoke, Va.
ExpanSIS was first used by the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (IDEA). Virginia Moxley, College of Human Ecology dean, is co-director of IAA and a founding member of Great Plains IDEA. Sue Maes is IAA co-director.
Earlier this fall, ExpanSIS received an Outstanding Work award from the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (WCET). K-State’s award recognizes and celebrates the best and most promising practices in technology in higher education.
The award will be presented in November in Atlanta.
In addition, ExpanSIS was honored recently with the Excellence in Innovation award from the University Continuing Education Association, Great Plains Region.
ExpanSIS was developed to solve the problem of securely exchanging
student information for alliances such as Great Plains IDEA, said Deb Wood, coordinator.
Institutions teaching courses can quickly and easily obtain student e-mail addresses and other pertinent information to set up course access for alliance students not enrolled at the teaching campus, she explained.
At the end of the term, grades are entered into the system by the teaching institution and transferred onto the student’s transcript at the enrolling institution.
“We needed a system that was secure, and that allowed exchange of this pertinent information to try to make the collaboration as seamless as possible for the student,” Wood added.
The application uses a secure, web-based Internet platform. The program can be
accessed from any computer with Internet access.
