Sandra B. Procter and Carol Ann Holcomb
An article by Drs. Procter and Holcomb entitled “Breastfeeding Duration and Childhood Overweight Among Low-Income Children in Kansas, 1998–2002″ will be published in the January issue of the American Journal of Public Health. Their research indicates that, although breastfeeding for longer duration appeared to be protective against overweight among 4-year-old non-Hispanic children in Kansas, cultural and environmental factors may override this protective benefit. Procter is Extension specialist in human nutrition and coordinator of the Expanded Food and Nutritional Education Program in Kansas. Holcomb is a professor in the Department of Human Nutrition.
Kelly Welch
The instructor in family studies and human services has been named outstanding faculty member by Mortar Board senior honorary. She is one of nine on campus recognized by her contributions to scholarship, leadership and service.
HRIMD food safety research team
“Food Safety Training Requirements and Food Handlers’ Knowledge and Behaviors” has been accepted for publication in the refereed journal, Food Protection Trends. Authors are Valerie Pilling, Laura Brannon, Carol Shanklin, Kevin Roberts, Betsy Barrett and Amber Howells.
Georganne W. White
A May 2007 graduate in interior design, White received a diversity scholarship from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to attend the annual National Preservation Conference this fall in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn.
Ann Sanders
The PhD candidate in family studies and personal financial planning has been awarded the $3,000 Marjorie J. and Richard D. Morse Family and Community Public Policy Scholarship. Her research topic: options for lower income families needing short term cash loans and the financial education needed to facilitate their decision-making process.
Deborah D. Canter
Professor and head of HRIMD Deb Canter is co-author of “The growing importance of food and culinary knowledge and skills in dietetics practice” in Topics in Clinical Nutrition 22(4): 313, 2007. Other authors are M. E. Moorachian and J. Boyce.
