College marks state’s 148th birthday

Dr. Moxley and the Kansas Flag

Dean Virginia Moxley threw a 148th birthday party for the State of Kansas on Thursday in Justin Hall’s Hoffman Lounge. Kansas entered the union as an antislavery state in 1861. Faculty, staff, students and friends celebrated at the dean’s 3rd annual Kansas Day party with beef barbecue and birthday cheesecake. A special salute went to the first Kansas governor, Charles Robinson. Known as a political maverick, he opposed slavery, advocated equal rights for women and African-Americans, and presided over the era of “Bleeding Kansas.” K-State was founded in 1863.
