Romig plays processional, Furrey speaks
During Spring 2009 graduation ceremonies, Laura Romig, senior in dietetics, played the processional and recessional for the colleges of Business Administration and Human Ecology in Bramlage Coliseum.
Dustin Furrey, senior in family studies and human services, was student speaker for the College of Human Ecology commencement ceremony.
Stefka wins Mary Molt scholarship
Kyle Stefka has been awarded the 2009 Mary Molt Student Excellence Award. He receives a $1,000 scholarship, the opportunity to compete for the national Student Employee of the Year Award — which includes a $3,000 scholarship — and will make a trip to the national conference in July in Milwaukee.
Stefka, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, is a student production lead and has worked for K-State housing and dining services since 2006. The Midwest Region of the National Association of College and University Food Services gave the award.
The award, named in honor of Mary Molt, assistant director of dining services, recognizes the most outstanding student employees in college and university food-service operations in the region.
Wen-chi Chen earns Rotary scholarship
Wen-chi Chen, doctoral student in human ecology, is one of five students who received the $500 International Graduate Student Scholarship from the Konza and Manhattan Rotary clubs. He is from Taiwan.
Barnard on Cafe Solara team
Adam Barnard, senior in hotel and restaurant management, and his teammates won second place in the service division of the recent Next Big Think competition on campus.
Their entrepreneurial plans for a company was Cafe Solara, a full-service restaurant serving breakfast and lunch from a renovated residential property and offering cooking demonstrations and private dining in the evenings.
Winners were Flour Indulgence, a company making edible bouquets from baked goods, and Shelf Help, an organization that donates used children’s books to charter schools.
The Center for the Advancement for Entrepreneurship was sponsor.
Mathy develops recycling plan
Melissa Mathy, junior in human ecology, developed recycling programs at her home and workplace for a project called “Board at the Bars.”
She is one of several students who spent the semester as environmental activists through applied research projects addressing subjects including over consumption, meditation and water preservation.
Valerie Carroll, instructor in women’s studies, teaches a women and environmentalism course where students conduct a lived experience class project and blog about the progress of their experience on “Women and Environmentalism: Lived Experience”.
