Dean urges faculty to prepare students to lead their professions
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Dean Virginia Moxley called on faculty to prepare students to move to the top of their professions.
“We prepare them to get jobs, yes. But more important, we want them to leave our college ready to begin their ascent to the top of their fields,” she said, speaking at the College of Human Ecology’s annual Fall Forum this week.
“Our students need to become fans of the work of this college – immersed in the culture of the human sciences, tutored by caring faculty and staff, helped along their way to career and life success,” Moxley added.
Other hallmarks of learning to nourish, she told faculty, are:
- Fluency in thinking about and communicating complicated ideas,
- Confidence in their cultural and international capabilities,
- Autonomy in their ability to continue learning,
- Skill to understand and apply disciplinary knowledge with finesse and insight,
- Ability to achieve good outcomes under conditions of ambiguity and/or conflict, and
- Ability to apply knowledge about how human systems work to their professional and leadership roles.
Classes start Monday, Aug. 24.
